My city break wishlist – 6 cities I want to visit in 2016

2015 was a bit of a bummer in terms of travel, unless you want to count moving to Leeds? I guess it does count in a way! Because we moved cities and had to spend a few months saving to catch up on bills etc, we ended up only taking very small breaks within the UK. There wasn’t a single flight for us in 2015, something which made me feel a bit itchy thinking about it! Hopefully we’ll be able to splash out on a few trips soon, so in the spirit of making lists and resolutions, here’s my city break wishlist for 2016.

1 / Copenhagen

This city is on so many travel bloggers’ lists for 2016, I think mainly because it’s so close yet one of those places you just never seem to get to. The first thing I’d do is see the real Little Mermaid, a statue based on the mermaid in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale. Then I’d take some classic pics of Nyhavn dock, try some seafood, and see all the amazing architecture Copenhagen has.

2 / Reykjavik

Iceland was on our 2015 wishlist to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and we even sorted a 12-day itinerary, but we never got there due to moving. Maybe this will be the year? We planned to spend a couple of days exploring Reykjavik, then tackle driving the Golden Circle, stopping in a couple of AirBnBs on the way to Vatnajökull National Park. Driving in Iceland is on my ‘brave things to do’ list because it’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the best way to explore the country at your own pace. Let’s make this happen 2016!

3 / Manchester

This one’s kinda cheating because we are actually going to Manchester in January! Neither of us have ever been (even for gigs) so since we’re now only an hour’s train ride away, we figured a quick weekend away would do us some good. We’ve booked a super intriguing hotel, so make sure you’re following me on twitter for snaps. I’ll also be posting some exclusive stories from the trip in my newsletter – sign up to those who wander to keep updated.

4 / New York

The last time I visited New York was in 2007, so we’re well overdue a visit. It’s one of those cities that just gets better and better so it’s worth a place on my city break wishlist. I plan to do all the things I never got to do eight years ago – see the Friends fountain, walk through a pedestrianised Times Square, buy all the things from Sephora, drink at a cocktail bar (I was 19 and too young to drink back then!). I’d also get better photos of the Empire State and 30 Rock…

5 / Dublin

It’s so close to us now (only an hour’s plane journey) so there’s really no excuse to not get over to Ireland in 2016. I want to pull my own pint of Guinness at the Storehouse, drink in a proper Irish pub, browse ancient manuscripts at Chester Beatty Library, eat street food at Howth market, try some Irish stew, listen to traditional music at The Cobblestone…The list is truly endless.

6 / Stockholm

Another city that’s been sitting on my city break wishlist for far too long! And it’s just another quick plane journey away too. I hope to indulge in some fika, eat a real smorgasbord of herring, meatballs and salmon, take a few ferries to the Archipelago and see the calm side to Sweden, soak up the culture in all the museums, and take hundreds of pictures on the Sodermalm bridge while the sun is shining.

Where’s on your city break wishlist for 2016? Tell me in the comments!

I want to try and make it to Manchester this year as well. I’ve passed through there briefly years ago on the way to Edinburgh but I didn’t get the chance to explore it properly

You’re going to love Copenhagen, Stockholm and Reykjavik!! Have been to the two former countless of times and never stopped loving them! And I visited Reykjavik for the first time last year and it was amazing! Wish I could have stayed for longer than 24 hours though ;)
Good luck for your upcoming travels and happy new year!!!

Happy New Year Van! I totally forgot about Tromso too – desperate to see the Northern Lights and I’ve heard Norway is the perfect place.

Reykjavik is on my wish list too! I need to visit Copenhagen one day too :)

I looooved reading your travel plans – I think we have pretty similar dreams! I feel the SAME way about planning an Iceland trip. I even bought a guidebook and everything but the thought of a major trip (I’m hoping for 3+ weeks) is incredibly daunting; almost enough to make me want to turn to another easier to plan destination! I hope your Iceland (and other travel plans) come to fruition in 2016 :))

Lovely list! It seems when ever I read other people’s travel wish lists, mine expands. #wanttoseealltheplaces

I know, right?! I’ve read everyone else’s posts in the link-up and I must have added 20 other places to my list..

Such a shame you didn’t manage to get on any flights in 2015 (I think I would have gone crazy!) but exploring the UK is still lots of fun. Great wishlist for this year and I hope you get to do some of them. Iceland is high on my bucketlist too!

Fabulous list! I loved Copenhagen and Stockholm – such great city breaks. I’m fascinated to read about Manchester – another of the UK cities I have yet to see!

Reykjavik and Copenhagen are both on my bucket list too… I was a little disappointed with Manchester, but it’s not terrible! x

We just got back from Manchester too and I feel a little the same way…I may have hyped it up too much! *whispers* I definitely prefer Leeds…

Copenhagen was awesome! We managed to do a city break last year and loved it. I also really love Manchester, the centre is really great. I really want to get to Stockholm too!

Copenhagen and Stockholm have just arrived on mine too – my husband keeps going and loves them… Hope you get to 1 or other soon!

I’d love to visit Copenhagen too – am planning a road trip in Spain which I’m really excited about

Such a great list! You would love Copenhagen, Charley – especially in the summer. It’s such a fun city to wander around. I’m hoping to stay “local” this year and travel more around Europe, as we always try to do a “big” trip to SE Asia every year and end up neglecting what’s on our doorstep! I hope you have a wonderful 2016 :) xx

Copenhagen for me too. This year, I’d love to visit those cities I’ve never got round to, like Lisbon, Lyons and Berlin.

    • 10th January 2016 / 8:42 pm

Berlin is amaaaaazing! And so close too. Have a look at the category on here if you want some tips :)

Reykjavik is on my list for this year too! And if you do manage to make it to Dublin, hit me up for some off the beaten path recommendations.

    • 10th January 2016 / 8:41 pm

Most definitely! I’m hoping we’ll have time to go in the summer. Will let you know!

  16. 7th January 2016 / 4:28 pm

I’d still like to make it to Ireland, it’s one of those places that’s so close yet so far away. Hopefully you can make it to Iceland! It’s not that bad driving I thought, the main roads are big and reminded me of America.

    • 10th January 2016 / 8:37 pm

I’ve found some articles that say it’s super dangerous, and others that say it’s absolutely fine. I guess I’ll have to go to make my own mind up!

These look like such fab places, I have been to Manchester but I would love to go to Copenhagen and Dublin! Xx

Leeds is my favourite city in the world. I can’t wait to move back this year. You make Dublin and Stockholm sound incredible!

Reykjavik is great. We hired a car for a day, hubby did most of the driving but I did drive for a bit once we were out of the city. Apart from getting a little lost in the dark on the way home it was totally fine and probably easier than driving in the UK!

I’m planning on doing much further afield trips this year but I did a ton of city breaks last year and loved it. My favourite was Oslo but I really loved Prague too. Copenhagen is beautiful and well worth visiting but the Little Mermaid statue is actually really tiny!

Oooh yes I’ve heard the statue is smaller than expected! Guess I’ll have to take a big zoom lens for my camera :)
