Bistro Soho Bratislava review

Since me and R were in Bratislava for two weeks, we asked around for some restaurant recommendations for when we couldn’t be bothered to cook. We’d rented an AirBnB apartment for the whole of our stay so managed to cook most nights, but some days we’d worked such long hours we just couldn’t be arsed to try and make something up! One of those restaurants was just around the corner – Bistro Soho Bratislava.

Described as a hipster-ish Thai restaurant that uses really fresh ingredients, it sounded just our sort of thing. And as R is gluten intolerant, all the rice dishes sounded perfect. Since we hadn’t figured out how to say ‘gluten-free’ in Slovak, it was just as well!

The first night we went it was pretty busy, so we tentatively asked if they had any spare tables that night. The staff had a look at their plans and tried to move some things around but it was too busy to accommodate us, so we booked for a few days later. If there’s one tip to give, it’s to definitely book a table for this place. It’s very rare that they can take walk-ins.

When we did manage to get a table, it was so worth the wait. The place is effortlessly cool and the food is incredible. I had the coconut chicken and vegetables with jasmine rice, and R tried the thai beef and chilli.

It might look like a small portion in that bowl but there’s a whole heap of rice under those veggies and the bowls are actually quite deep. I swear, this is the best Thai food I’ve ever had (having not actually been to Thailand yet) and one of Bratislava’s foodie gems.

Before I forget – the main courses are EUR 5,90. At the time of writing that’s £4.90. Value for money or what?

As a recently ‘reformed’ vegetarian I went straight for the chicken. And knowing that every ingredient at Bistro Soho is fresh from the kitchen was just another reason we loved this place so much. It’s not all meat though – there are plenty of veggie dishes to choose from. As well as stir fry and rice, they also offer super tasty curries, soups and salads.

Each main course comes with a slice of melon to nibble on after you’ve finished, which for me was like a fruity dessert rather than a palate cleanser! The portion size left me with only the tiniest bit of room for a treat afterwards.

It was so good, we booked again for the next week when our colleague arrived! But oh my god what I’d give to be tucking into the coconut chicken and rice again right now.
